In November, we acquired M, N, O and P to occupy our vacant chicken yard. Stella and Hermes were the original occupants of the blue coop, which was built for them by Ian Hilberger of Hillsboro. When Ian and his sister Kate grew up and went off to college, the family was ready to part with their chickens, coop and all–which is how we got back into chickens after many years without. After Stella and Hermes, we just started with A. So you can figure out how many chickens have lived in the blue coop.
M, N, O and P were acquired by John from a farm in North Plains. They came as pullets, not yet laying but old enough to survive without heat lamps and such. They settled in over the winter, enjoying projects such as pecking a big hole in the side of a pumpkin and eating every bit of pumpkin out of the shell. Last week, we found the very first egg! The next day there were two, then two again, and today we found three. Guess what’s for dinner at the Harrisons?
